Privacy and Safety When Working Online
Online opportunity work still involves strangers, files, and video. These habits reduce avoidable risk.
Chatting, teaching, and reviewing all create records: messages, video, photos of hotel rooms, and sometimes identity documents. Privacy is not a luxury setting. It is part of doing the work sustainably.
Protect personal information
- Do not share your home address, children’s details, or daily movement patterns with new contacts.
- Use platform messages until you have a reason to move.
- Keep passwords and one-time codes to yourself.
- Blur documents in screenshots if you need to show a confirmation number only.
Video and teaching safety
For Swahili lessons, sit in a space that does not reveal extra personal details on camera. Use a virtual background if you need to. Decline requests to continue the class on an unrecorded personal app if that violates platform rules or your comfort. End the session if the learner becomes abusive.
Hotel assignment photos
Photograph what the brief allows. Avoid capturing other guests’ faces, room numbers of occupied rooms you were not assigned, or staff ID badges. Follow local laws about photography in private spaces.
Age restrictions
Many platforms require participants to be 18 or older. Do not help a minor create a paid-work profile. If a chatting role is adult in nature, it should say so clearly; if it hides that fact, leave.
